Matildas captain Sam Kerr is now officially Australia’s greatest ever soccer goalscorer.

The soccer superstar scored five of the Matildas’ 18 goals in their first Women’s Asian Cup group game against Indonesia in India on Friday night (Australian time).

By the end of the match, Kerr’s total was 54, surpassing previous record-holder Socceroo Tim Cahill. Cahill scored 50 goals for Australia.

Speaking after the match, Kerr said, “Timmy [Cahill] is a legend in Australia, so to be in the same conversation as him is an amazing honour.

“Any time I score for my country it’s an amazing honour… I don’t take any goal for granted.

“I said after the game there’s no other team I’d rather do it with.

“It’s an honour to wear the jersey for the Matildas and an even bigger honour to score.

“It’s something I’ll remember forever.”

Tim Cahill also took to Twitter to congratulate Kerr on breaking his record after the match.

“Congratulations @samkerr1 on this amazing achievement,” Cahill said.

“You are an inspiration globally and I’m one of your biggest supporters and always here for you on and off the park.

“Keep breaking records and most importantly enjoy the journey.”
