Gay The Block favourite Mat Johnson has announced that he is going to be a father to a baby boy in December.
“I didn’t know if I was ready at that stage of my life.” The Block’s Mat, announcing he is going to be a Dad.
Speaking with New Idea, he shared that his Adelaide hair salon wasn’t the only place he met his Block teammate Robby.
It was where he met Leah Cocks, his good friend and the mother of his soon-to-be-born child.
“I have always wanted to be a dad, especially in this later part of my life,” the 41-year-old said.
“I didn’t know if I was ready at that stage of my life, and I think I was terrified because I have a very good life that I worked decades to be able to have.”
“With hairdressing, you can form relationships with people and bonds, especially after years and lots of beautiful conversations.”
Leah, who is also in a same sex relationship, and Mat will co-parent together.

Leah and Matt met when she sat in his hairdressing chair at the age of 14, 20 years ago.
When Leah first asked Mat to have a child together, he said no, scared that his life would change.
A year later, he realised he was ready to become a father, and they started the process.
“I was ecstatic when it was a yes,” Leah said.
“I wouldn’t have done it with just anyone. It’s only because it’s her.” Mat said.
The pair have been trying for the past seven years to overcome medical roadblocks to conceive.

Leah found out she was pregnant in Mat’s first week filming The Block after a round of IVF.
She didn’t want to distract Mat while filming the show in Daylesford and waited for him to return to Adelaide three months later.
“I was so nervous,” Leah said, “After Mat returned, I booked in to get my hair done.”
“It was the very last appointment that he had for the day, and I sat there in my baggy clothes and gave him a card.”
“It had the ultrasound in it, and Mat just looked at me and said, ‘Congratulations!’”
Mat admitted it took him a minute to realise what was happening.
“I suddenly realised I’m going to be a dad.” he said.
What a big week, announcing he will soon be a father, and it’s auction week with the final of The Block.
Still, Mat can’t wait for his son to be born and grow up alongside his teammate and best friend Robbie’s son.
