A 62-year-old has been charged after he was allegedly caught putting hydrochloric acid in a lubricant dispenser at a Sydney gay sex club.

Police allege the man entered the venue on Bridge Street in the Sydney suburb of Rydalmere on Saturday and filled a dispenser with the corrosive acid.

Police said items in the room had been fitted with alarms alerting security officers to tampering following a number of similar incidents.

“Police will allege an alarm sounded and security detained the man before police from Rosehill Local Area Command attended,” NSW Police said.

The venue has been named as the Aarows Gay and Bi Sex Club in north-west Sydney.

Hydrochloric acid is highly corrosive and can produce serious burns and scars on contact with skin.

Police said the man has been charged with administering poison with the intention to injure, entering a building with intent to commit an indictable offence, malicious damage and driving whilst suspended.

He was granted conditional bail and will appear at Parramatta Local Court next month.
