Magomed Tushayev: Chechen anti-gay warlord killed in Ukraine

Magomed Tushayev

According to reports from Ukraine, Magomed Tushayev, a warlord notorious for his part in Chechen gay purges, died during the early stages of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Illia Ponomarenko, defence reporter for the Kyiv Independent posted to Twitter that Tushayev died in action. The Ukrainian Armed Forces later confirmed the death.

“Magomed Tushayev, leader of the 141 motorized regiment of the Chechen National Guard, was killed!”

Tushayev’s death occurred during a battle for control of a Ukrainian airport.

News reports said that Tushayev’s unit carried a deck of playing cards depicting top Ukrainian officials. However, it seems they so far failed to take out any of those ‘high-value targets’.

Magomed Tushayev worked closely with Chechen dictator and Putin crony, Ramzan Kadyrov. Before news of his associate’s death, Kadyrov boasted of Ukraine’s failure to inflict any casualties on the invaders.

“As of today, as of this minute, we do not have one single casualty, or wounded, not a single man has even had a runny nose.”

Human rights groups described Magomed Tushayev as the ‘architect’ of previous gay purges in Chechnya. Some also accuse him of personal involvement in the torture and murder of LGBTIQ+ Chechens.

Consequently, many comments on social media celebrated the death.

“His family can take comfort knowing he died for nothing and on the wrong side of history.”

One less mass murderer

However, activist Peter Tatchell told the Jerusalem Post he never rejoiced at the killing of anyone.

“[But] his death means one less mass murderer on the loose… This will mean that he is no longer able to abduct, torture and kill Chechen LGBTs and dissidents, which is a good thing.”

At least one thing to celebrate in the atrocious war in Ukraine. Putin and his oligarchs are no better than International terrorists and we all know what the US did to Bin Laden. Let’s hope he meets a similar fate.
