Madonna has given a shout out to Pope Francis during the US leg of her Rebel Heart Tour and his historic US tour.
At her peak Madge angered the Catholic Church every day and twice on Sundays but in fan-shot video uploaded online on September 24, she told her Philadelphia audience: “Since Popey-Wopey is on his way over here, I want to dedicate this song to him.” The song? Edith Piaf’s “La Vie en Rose.”
Pope Francis has gone rogue and rankled some conservatives with his progressive views on issues like abortion and climate change that weren’t lost on Madonna.
“Rules are for fools. That’s why I like the new Pope. He seems very open-minded,” she told the crowd.
She also joked about similarities between the routes of both of their tours by offering up the only logical explanation.
“The Pope is stalking me… Either he’s a copycat or he’s secretly in love with me,” she said, adding: “I’ve been excommunicated from the Catholic Church three times. It shows the Vatican really cares.”
But Madonna mightn’t have been that far off the mark… Pope Francis is making a grab for her crown by embarking on his own pop music career.
His first single “Wake Up! Go! Go! Forward!” features excerpts of his hymns and speeches set to a pop-rock beat. The track will appear on his debut album, released in time for Christmas.
