Madonna gave us a peek inside her costume closet, and it’s huge

Madonna has dug into her personal archives to celebrate her 40 years in music, and it looks like she’s kept almost everything.

This year is the 40th anniversary of Madonna’s debut single Holiday and her self-titled debut album. In July, the music icon will kick off a major greatest hits world tour to celebrate the milestone.

This week Madonna gave her Instagram followers a rare glimpse inside her costume and memorabilia archives.

In a series of photos, Madonna revealed the climate-controlled storage space is huge, with rows of rows of costumes in garment bags and shelves and shelves of boxes.

Madonna also showed off her collection of Jean Paul Gaultier-designed cone bras. The singer and the designer collaborated on the costuming for her 1990 Blonde Ambition Tour, including the cone bras that would become iconic.

Another garment she showed off was the bejewelled corset from her Re-Invention Tour in 2004.

“A trip to my archives is always a nostalgic trip down memory lane!” Madonna wrote.

“If I think about my journey through music over the last 4 decades – how could I not think about all the incredible clothes I got to wear and all the amazing designers I was lucky enough to work with!!”

Another photo shows what appears to be negatives or tapes of her 1991 Truth or Dare documentary film.

Madonna shares tribute to her mum

Madonna also shared a sweet story about her mother who sadly died of cancer in 1963.

“When I was a little girl I remember my mother was always cold,” she recalled.

“Partly because she was sick but also because she never had a coat. She always spent what little money we had on our coats and I remember standing outside waiting for the school bus with my mother shivering in the cold in the middle of winter!!

“Years later when I became successful my mother’s sister said to me: ‘Now you can buy all the coats your mother couldn’t buy for herself!’

“The journey from the memory of my shivering mother in winter to me shivering in the over air-conditioned storage space where all my costumes are stored is quite remarkable!

“I am overwhelmed with gratitude. Every time I put on an incredible coat I think of my Mother. I hope she likes my taste in costumes. But most of all i hope she’s warm!”

‘We need a Madonna archival exhibition at the Met’

The peek into Madonna’s archive of four decades of costumes left followers wanting more.

“We need a Madonna archival exhibition at the Met pleeeeease,” one fan wrote.

“I’ve always imagined rooms like this existed but seeing it is almost too overwhelming for my little gay heart,” another wrote.

“I would do ANYTHING to try the lavender corset on,” somebody else commented.

“If I could only go in that archive for 10 mins my dreams would become a reality,” singer Rita Ora wrote.

Madonna has only toured Australia twice

Madonna’s Celebration Tour dates don’t yet include any stops in Australia, or anywhere else in the Southern Hemisphere.

She has only ever toured Australia twice, with 23 years in between. The first time was 1993’s The Girlie Tour and then again in 2016 on the Rebel Heart Tour.

But that year, she performed a one-off intimate music, cabaret and storytelling show Tears of a Clown in Melbourne as a gift to her patient Australian fans.
