Now here is a real leap of faith.
The United Methodist Church forbids same-sex ceremonies taking place in their churches or being conducted by their ministers.
So when Trevor Harper decided it was time to cement his relationship with his partner of nine years, Davis Covin, he worked with their pastor Reverend John Wright to plan something extra special.
And it paid off.
Not only did Davis say yes, but the couple received a standing ovation from their pastor and fellow members of the congregation.
Despite their church’s official stance on same-sex marriage, Trevor was at pains to make it clear that he and Davis have always been accepted.
Trevor told Buzzfeed News: “That church has been, for us, really the first time we have really been able to live out loud as a couple.”
In fact, it was this acceptance that he wanted to portray through his proposal video.
Posting it on Youtube, Trevor wrote: “This is a church that has welcomed us and changed our lives. All are welcome, no exceptions.”
