The first trailer has dropped for the long-awaited reimagining of Queer as Folk, before it comes to streaming in Australia in three weeks.
The new series, by US streaming service Peacock, follows a new group of friends in New Orleans after a devastating tragedy transforms their lives.
Queer as Folk stars Devin Way as commitment-phobic Brodie and Fin Argus as high school student Mingus.
Jesse James Keitel plays Ruthie, a transgender party girl, while Ryan O’Connell plays Julian, a pop culture nerd with cerebral palsy.
And Johnny Sibilly plays lawyer Noah, while actor CG stars as Shar, a non-binary professor pursuing parenthood.
Creator Stephen Dunn said, “Like most queer ’90s kids, I had a unique relationship with the original Queer as Folk.
“Growing up, I was desperate for any sort of connection with people like me. It was the first time I really felt seen.
“The show offered a new paradigm. One where we could accept and celebrate queer love, families, and communities on a global stage.
“It was truly iconic. I’m honored that Russell T. Davies, the creator of the original series, entrusted me to continue this legacy.”
In 1999, Queer As Folk started as a British series, created by Russell T Davies, about gay men in Manchester. The first American adaptation, set in Pittsburgh, then ran from 2000 to 2005.
Queer as Folk reboot streaming in Australia on Stan
Stephen Dunn also explained, “Our new Queer as Folk is set in New Orleans, one of North America’s most unique queer communities.
“I’m immensely proud the new series is comprised of an electric ensemble of fresh characters that mirror the modern global audience.
“If there’s one person who sees Queer as Folk and feels less alone, or who now feels more supported and seen, our job is done.”
Guest stars include Kim Cattrall as southern debutante Brenda as well as Juliette Lewis as single mother Judy.
Nyle DiMarco also plays grad Leo, while Lukas Gage plays personal trainer Eric.
In Australia, streaming service Stan previously confirmed its release date for the Queer As Folk reboot.
Queer As Folk will stream in Australia from Friday, June 10.
