After a year off due to COVID, Ella Ganza and the House of Alexander return to unleash Brisbane’s second-ever vogue spectacular, the Alexander Ball at the Tivoli.
Originally planned for tonight, because of border restrictions, the event will now take place on 6 November.
Sending love and apologies, the House of Alexander explained holding the event later would allow the participation of southern voguers currently locked out of the state.
Ella Ganza, mother of the House of Alexander said she’s beyond excited to see this year’s ballroom extravaganza become part of the Brisbane Festival.
As Meanjin’s pioneering ballroom house, the House of Alexander pioneered the local celebration of underground LGBTQIA+ subculture and countercultural phenomenon that is ballroom.
However, Ella said the American television show POSE raised the profile of ballroom into the stratosphere.
“When we first formed the House of Alexander, we had to explain to people what ballroom was. After all, voguing did begin as an underground subculture hidden from the public gaze.
“Now though, thanks to the fabulous queens in Ryan Murphy’s POSE, everyone knows about ballroom.
“The Alexander Ball includes everything people loved about POSE, from voguing to catwalks and of course, the wild outfits.
“The House of Alexander created the ball as a safe space for queer persons of colour to fully express themselves on the runway. This is a glittering night of celebration, community, art, protest, and also, never forget, self-expression.
“So no if, but, or maybe — off your butt, into your most spectacular outfit and prepare to STRIKE A POSE!”
