The cult cabaret La Clique continues to entertain audiences at HOTA, and for performer and “chaos engine” Tara Boom, being a part of the cast is a dream come true.
La Clique has returned to HOTA on the Gold Coast, and the multi-award-winning production continues to leave audiences floored.
When the show debuted over twenty years ago, performer Tara Boom had just started learning circus; now she’s a standout star.
“I do two incredibly different acts to the point where I was once working with a technician who didn’t believe I was the same person,” Tara laughed.
The acts are a complete juxtaposition of each other
“One is an umbrella juggling act, which has been described as searingly beautiful and elegant,” Tara shares.
“And the other is an anarchic hula hoop routine in which I strap a popcorn machine and a helmet with gaffer tape, and plug myself into 240 volts, rubbing butter everywhere and making popcorn.”
“I like it when you can keep the audience guessing and show many different sides of myself on stage.”

La Clique has been a dream show for Tara since she was a small child, and the act she does in the latest production was actually designed with the show in mind.
“Sometimes I can pinch myself because this is an absolute dream and I’m living it,” Tara said.
“I’ve watched these performers and thought they were the absolute coolest people, and now I get to perform beside them.”
“When I started four years ago, it was intimidating, but working with them feels like a beautiful moment of respite from an increasingly insane world.
“We’ve got moments of just pure unbridled joy and hilarity, and also moments where you cry and tap back into humanity and the reasons why we want to continue.”
La Clique delivers an exhilarating mix of artistry and mischief designed to keep you captivated from the moment the lights fade till the performers’ final bow.
The production, which thrives on surprise, has wowed audiences in New York and Paris; now it’s time for the Gold Coast.

‘This isn’t just variety, it’s vaudeville’
“All the acts in the show give you something so insanely different, and it’s all so artistic,” Tara said.
“If you just want to watch artistry, like the perfection of artistry, you watch Heather Holiday; she is amazing.”
“Want to cry and tap into emotional times, David Pereira is currently doing a silk sack on the nature of daylight and this bit of earth superimposed over each other, and I just cry.”
“I used to have to follow David straight after, and it was a beautiful thing to do, because as a clown, to get stuck in the guts, get your heart wrenched out and then to go on stage and completely flip the energy is a special place.
“But it also puts you right into the feeling you need to attune to everyone’s emotions on the stage.
“You’ve got people at the top of their fields in all different disciplines, different genres, this isn’t just variety, it’s vaudeville.
“This is the show that brought all of that back into massive circulation, and it’s pure joy to be a part of.”

La Clique is back at HOTA for an encore season until April 19 with a fresh lineup of international performers and beloved favourites.
You won’t want to miss this combination of seduction, acrobatics, laughs and more.
La Clique contains nudity, coarse language, sexual references, adult content and themes, strobe lights, special effects, loud noises and fun times.
