Kevin Silvester made his hot daddy fantasy into a song, STEP BY STEP (DAD)

Ever had a daydream about a friend’s parent? What if that little thought spiralled into a full-blown fantasy, or music video? That’s the case for Kevin Silvester with his new gay banger, STEP BY STEP (DAD).

The Australian pop-rock artist has taken the fantasy into new territory with his wild new single.

It’s the latest taste of his upcoming narrative album K, which follows Silvester’s alter ego K and turns a harmless fantasy into an increasingly chaotic love affair.

An affair which involves his best friend’s dad.

“It’s always difficult relying on the shock factor,” Silvester told QNews. “K is chronically single, and these songs describe his experiences. K is an amplified version of my own personality; he is the best and worst parts of me.”

“Writing the song with my best friend, it began as a very sad acoustic song, which I didn’t like. But the lyrics were so funny, and we couldn’t stop laughing.”

Meet Roger, the silver fox of your dreams

The story begins with K meeting a charming older man through Grindr, only to later discover his steamy hookup is actually his friend Kiki’s dad, Roger.

Rather than sharing glances across the dinner table and pretending like it never happened, K and Roger continue their secret affair.

There’s a family camping trip. There’s midnight skinny dipping. And then K starts wondering whether this could be something more.

Because why simply date your best friend’s dad when you could become their stepdad!

“Step by step, gonna be your step dad” becomes the gloriously unhinged chorus, as K convinces himself this wildly complicated situation might actually be fate.

“K and I both have Daddy issues,” Silvester laughed, “And this is my way of sharing that.”

“I want to get people to destigmatise Daddy issues. When I posted the song online, everyone had Daddy issues, so people are connecting with the song on another level that’s separate to what I set up.”

A little messy, a little sad and very, very gay

Beneath all the silliness, Silvester says STEP BY STEP (DAD) is really about something far more relatable.

“We’ve all fallen victim to turning a bad decision into a grand romantic fantasy,” he says.

For Silvester, the song explores that deliciously messy space between desire and validation. Sometimes we don’t just want someone. We want to feel chosen by them.

The song nearly stayed hidden, too.

Originally recorded as a voice memo, Silvester shelved it because he thought it was “too much” and “too incriminating”.

“The whole marketing campaign has been, ‘Here is my list of requirements for dating me and here are my red flags, come be my boyfriend’.” Silvester laughed. “That’s why I’m still single.”

Pop-rock-bop

Following the June release of IT BOY, STEP BY STEP (DAD) dives headfirst into what happens when you stop overthinking and start following every intrusive thought.

Complete with punchy pop-rock energy, a clap-along chorus and the iconic line “Australia’s Next Top Bottom”, it’s an absolute bop.

Silvester wants listeners to laugh, gasp and then discover there’s something a little more vulnerable underneath.

“All of my songs have a fun shock value to them, but when you dig a little bit deeper it brings up more questions,” Silvester said.

“Why does K want to seduce his best friend’s dad, or why does he want to go on the worst hook-up of his life in the middle of the night? His insecurities come through that way.”

STEP BY STEP (DAD) is out now, with his narrative album K set for release next year.

“The album is pretty much done,” Silvester said, and we are working on a tour as well, so stay tuned.”
