The Jussie Smollet trial for allegedly faking a hate crime took numerous twists and turns last week. Bodybuilder Ola Osundairo, countered accusations of homophobia with a photo of himself as a Trojan Warrior, handing out condoms at a Pride event with brother Abel. Meanwhile, Abel Osundairo denied accusations he masturbated with Jussie Smollett at a Chicago bathhouse.

Jussie Smollett

Gay, black Empire actor Jussie Smollett alleged in January 2019 that two white men attacked him while shouting homophobic and racial slurs. The actor claimed his assailants hit him, doused him with a chemical substance and wrapped a rope around his neck. However, allegations that the actor faked the attack soon followed. The Jussie Smollett legal saga included dropped charges and numerous claims and counterclaims. However, he now faces six charges of filing false police reports.

The prosecution alleges Smollett paid two Nigerian brothers to fake the attack on him. Smollett already knew the brothers socially and arranged work for them as extras on Empire. According to Ola and Abel Osundairo, Smollett explained the staged assault as a publicity stunt and they agreed because of favours he’d done them.

However, Smollett’s defence now accuses the brothers of carrying out the attack independent of him. They have not explained how the actor mistook the Nigerians for whites.

Ola Osundairo disputed a defence’s accusation he was homophobic, citing his three-year employment as a bouncer in a gay bar in Chicago’s Boystown. He also showed the trial a photo of himself and his brother in costumes as Trojan Warriors at a 2015 Pride Parade. The bodybuilders flexed their muscles for photos and handed out condoms at the event.

Ola told the court, “I have no hate for anybody.”

Smollett’s lawyers took a different tack with Ola’s brother, Abel. They accused him of a secret sexual relationship with Smollett, claiming the two men masturbated together during a visit to a Chicago bathhouse. Abel said he and Smollet did visit strip clubs and a bathhouse together but that they never masturbated together.

“We were friends.”

The Osundairo brothers previously alluded to potential repercussions to themselves and relatives in Nigeria from accusations of homosexuality. The country inflicts severe penalties for homosexual activity, in addition to relentless discrimination and vigilante violence.

The trial continues.
