New big-screen Agatha Christie adaptation Death on the Nile features a surprising twist for supporting co-stars Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French.

The new all-star adaptation of Agatha Christie’s 1937 classic is a sequel to 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express, and it opened in Aussie cinemas two weeks ago.

This whodunnit mystery follows detective Hercule Poirot on an Egyptian vacation. But Poirot is soon searching for a murderer aboard a glamorous river steamer after tragedy strikes a couple’s honeymoon.

Among the all-star cast are British comedy legends Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French, playing American socialite Marie Van Schuyler and her nurse Mrs. Bowers.

But in a suprising departure from the book, the two women are secretly lesbian lovers.

And people who’ve seen the film are loving the duo stealing scenes and their big twist in the movie. No more spoilers though!

‘Normally in a big film, we’re taking the mick’

Speaking about the film on UK program This Morning, Dawn French said director Kenneth Branagh – who stars as Poirot – was “brave” to cast them.

“Blimey, it’s a huge Hollywood blockbuster directed by Ken Branagh,” Dawn said.

“I thought [he] was fairly brave actually to cast Jennifer and I together. Because if we’re together in a great big film, normally we’re taking the mick.

“But we didn’t with this, because it’s a big proper grown-up film with a proper grown-up director that you want to raise your game for. What a fantastic guy.”
