Dr Andy Stamatiou
Well-known Brisbane fertility specialist, working primarily in IVF and fertility care, gynaecology and obstetrics. He has over 20 years experience as a doctor, and is proud to have helped a number of local same-sex couples become parents. What are some of the factors that make him a good doctor, especially in the fertility area? QNews Magazine sat down with Dr Andy to ask.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Dutton Park in Brisbane with loving parents and two brothers. My parents came from Greece when quite young and worked extremely hard to provide a good education for my brothers and me.
When did you decide to become a doctor?
As clichéd as it sounds, it is the only thing that I ever wanted to be.
How do you start your day?
It used to be hurrying up my sons to get to school but now they are adults, I can sleep in a little longer although not if a baby decides to arrive in the middle of the night.
When I am not working…
When is this?! I still like to watch my sons play soccer and try to be at every game, not always easy.
I wish I could…
educate women that there are now many solutions to matters of concern to them. For women to feel empowered to ask questions, seek solutions and to expect a good outcome.
Why did you become involved with the LGBTIQ community?
It actually wasn’t a decision I made. I just see people who wish to have a family. Whatever I can do to facilitate this is my goal. Families come in all shapes, sizes, combinations and varieties. LGBTIQ families are no different. I love helping those who wish to experience the joys of parenthood. I feel privileged.
What’s your greatest achievement?
It is making a difference in peoples’ lives. Seeing the look on someone’s’ face when they are told they are pregnant, the look when a baby is delivered, the look when someone who has had pain for many years no longer has that pain.
The best advice my parents gave me?
“Work hard and you will achieve. Appreciate your family and you will be a happy man.”
