Award-winning local queer indie film The Greenhouse is coming to streaming on Netflix next week for Mardi Gras season.
Last February, the movie premiered at the Mardi Gras Film Festival before screening at the prestigious BFI Flare Film Festival in London.
Since then, the intriguing time-travel drama has scored rave reviews and big awards at Australian film festivals. The Greenhouse starts streaming on Netflix on February 16.
On the eve of her widowed mother’s sixtieth birthday, lead character Beth (Jane Watt) discovers a way to travel back in time inside a greenhouse on her family’s isolated farm.
Travelling through the mysterious portal to the past, Beth seeks to relive her memories of her first lost love.
In the past, Beth finds her late second mother Lillian still alive. And her younger self is trying to deal with her own burgeoning sexuality.
But in the present, Beth’s mother and siblings eventually discover her secret trips and family members end up in danger.
Writer/director ‘couldn’t be prouder’ of The Greenhouse’s cast and crew
Writer/director Thomas Wilson-White said The Greenhouse is heavily autobiographical, incorporating his adolescence growing up with two mums in regional Australia.
He said he and producer Lizzie Cater were proud of the low-budget indie film after enduring a “tumultuous” production.
“The Greenhouse was finished during the pandemic in 2020,” Wilson-White said.
“For a while we wondered if we would ever screen our film for an audience.
“The pandemic seriously [affected] the cinema and festival landscape.
“We wouldn’t be here without the immense support of our local and international LGBTQIA+ champions, festival programmers and moviegoers.
“[They] sought out our film despite the unpredictable and often disenfranchising times we released in.”
Wilson-White and Cater created The Greenhouse independently. They shot the film on location in Jervis Bay on New South Wales’ south coast.
Wilson-White paid tribute the “the tenacity and determination” of the entire team despite the challenges of Covid-19.
The Greenhouse won Best Film at both the Melbourne Queer Film Festival and Gold Coast Film Festival.
It also won the Mardi Gras Film Festival’s Audience Choice Award and an Australian Directors Guild Award.
Wilson-White said he “couldn’t be prouder” to partner with Netflix to allow the film to reach LGBTIQ audiences.
The Greenhouse will premiere on Netflix on February 16. Watch the trailer below:
