Netflix has released the first trailer for The Andy Warhol Diaries, a new Ryan Murphy-produced docuseries exploring the gay artist’s life.

The six-part series chronicles the life of the enigmatic pop art icon, and brings to life Warhol’s own written diaries.

“Andy Warhol’s name, work, and legacy is known the world over,” Netflix said.

“But he remains, by design, a mystery.

“Now, a new docuseries combines his diary entries with rare footage to uncover the artist behind the art.”

The series traces Warhol’s “almost unbelievably diverse journey fluidly moving between mediums and eras” as an artist.

Andy Warhol was a “director, publisher, TV producer, scene maker, celebrity and much more” whom people both “revered and reviled”.

“While he was a larger than life figure, Warhol was intensely private regarding his personal life,” a synopsis reads.

“This series truly reveals much about the very complex man through his own words.

“And those who worked, created, and played alongside him, from the subversive to the mainstream.

The Andy Warhol Diaries deftly validates Warhol’s belief that the idea is not to live forever but to create art that will.”

AI technology used to recreate Andy Warhol’s voice

Andy Warhol died at age 58 in February 1987.

But for a decade prior, Warhol dictated his diaries by phone to journalist and friend Pat Hackett.

Hackett published the book after his death. Now the filmmakers have transformed those written words into speech using AI technology.

The software digitally recreates Warhol’s voice, with permission from The Andy Warhol Foundation.

Netflix’s The Andy Warhol Diaries mixes that material with interviews with celebrities and collaborators.

The Andy Warhol Diaries director Andrew Rossi said Warhol was intensely private about his personal life.

“Andy Warhol was famously guarded about his personal thoughts and opinions,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

“That’s one reason his Diaries are such a rare and fascinating window.

“He could be incredibly raw and emotional as he talked to his diarist over the phone.

“To fully appreciate the radical vulnerability that Andy shares in the Diaries, I felt that we needed to hear the words in Andy’s own voice.”

Rossi said the written Diaries also reveal Warhol’s “romantic longings and spiritual side as a living, breathing gay man.”

“I wanted to weave together Andy’s words and images to explore how that emotional life is reflected in the artworks he created during his last decade,” he said.

“My goal is for this collage of art and journalism to depict sides of Andy you’ve never seen or heard before.”

The Andy Warhol Diaries will arrive on Netflix on March 9. Watch the trailer below:
