We all known New South Wales has a regional town called Yass, population 6,506. Yass also has an IGA supermarket.
And that local IGA has had to spike an otherwise routine online giveaway thanks to a very ill-constructed hashtag.
The supermarket was running the giveaway over Facebook, with the grand prize being a rather coveted 10kg block of Cadbury chocolate.
The hashtag they chose? #igayass.
Taking to Facebook, the store’s management announced they were cancelling their giveaway. They went on to explain why.
“Unfortunately we have cancelled our 10kg Cadbury block giveaway for the time being,” they wrote.
“Yes if you read #igayass it can be funny, but we will not tolerate our staff being targeted online for some people’s amusement.
“Stay tuned for the new way to enter and we apologise to those who actually went to the trouble to enter this time.”
Play nice folks. Dozens of locals had their say in the comment section.
“I support gayass,” one wrote.
“Can’t unread it now,” another said.
“You guys brought this on yourselves. Maybe you should look at the picture and hashtag before posting,” one person declared.
Another pointed out, “No matter what the situation, it’s not justified to target the staff members.”
Agreed. However it is as good an excuse as any to bring this back:

Mayor crowned boys from Queer Eye ‘Yass Queens’
While in town, Tan, Karamo, and Jonathan helped out a local cattle farmer and former rodeo cowboy named George “take stock of his situation and grab life by the horns.”
Then, Antoni and Bobby set their sights on revamping both the menu and decor of a pub in the small town.
