Actor Hugh Sheridan is playing their first gay role in new Brisbane-shot festive flick Christmas on the Farm, streaming on Stan this week.
The heartfelt and hilarious rom-com was shot in Brisbane earlier this year. It stars Aussie actress Poppy Montgomery alongside Sheridan and Nicholas Brown, who plays Sheridan’s farmer husband.
Montgomery plays author Clementine Jones in the film. Her back-to-nature book about life on a blissful Queensland farm is picked up by New York publishers London & London.
But the problem is that’s a lie. “Clementine” is actually her daughter Emmy Jones, a New Yorker who has based the book on her late mother’s journals.
And before finalising the deal, the publishers announce they’re flying to Australia for an authentic farm Christmas before signing the deal.
Emmy must race back, roping in cousin David (Hugh Sheridan) and husband Miles (Nicholas Brown) to help maintain the ruse.
Another problem: London & London CEO Ellison London (Jeanette Cronin) brings handsome adult son Jack (Darren McMullen).
If Jack remembers his night with Emmy in New York, the game will be up.
Hugh Sheridan filmed Christmas on the Farm around Brisbane
Christmas on the Farm filmed in various locations in Brisbane city and surrounding suburbs.
Local producers Hoodlum Entertainment created the farm on a property in the semi-rural suburb of Brookfield, in outer-western Brisbane.
Hugh Sheridan told the Courier-Mail they have auditioned for a number of gay roles in the past but never got them.
“I was saying to my agent, I was stereotypically cast … playing the macho guy,” they said.
“It’s nice because it’s a rom-com. I feel like you can be a little bit more theatre with your choices.
“It’s fun. I haven’t done anything like that before.”
Amazing Grace star Nicholas Brown, who plays Sheridan’s on-screen husband, also felt the importance of playing the role.
“I’m not only a gay farmer but a brown gay farmer,” Brown said.
“[The film] is beautiful, it’s wholesome. There’s no homophobia on the farm or in the small country town, which is really cool.
“So my main goal was to just show this sparkling, joyous relationship and the two of us have that.”
Christmas on the Farm is streaming on Stan on Wednesday (December 1). Watch the trailer below:
