Long-running Australian soap Home and Away will introduce a gay character later this year.
Actor Ray Meagher, who plays the Channel Seven soap’s iconic character Alf, has teased in an interview that a new gay male character is on the way.
Asked whether he’d like to see a gay character introduced to Home and Away after the historic vote, the actor told Digital Spy, “That’s already happening – there is a storyline coming up.
“Our writers do try to keep abreast with the times, so there is an interesting character coming in. I won’t tell you too much more about him, about how he works out or what happens, but that is being addressed.
“And we’re all very pleased about it, by the way!”
Home and Away has featured both male and female gay characters before, but hasn’t featured an LGBTI storyline since 2009.
Police officer Charlie Buckton had a brief relationship with guest star Joey Collins that year, but sparked a media storm in Australia when conservative groups complained about seeing the same-sex relationship on screen.
Rival Aussie soap Neighbours has included several gay regulars in its cast since 2010, and last month featured its first same-sex wedding proposal, between couple Aaron and David.
