High-Heeled Hit Musical ‘Kinky Boots’ To Strut Into Brisbane

The award-winning, big-hearted musical Kinky Boots will strut into QPAC’s Lyric Theatre in Brisbane next week.

The musical is based on a real story — as told in the 2005 movie starring Australian actor Joel Edgerton — about a young man named Charlie who is struggling to save the shoe business he’s inherited from his father.

One of the people he meets is entertainer Simon, who needs some sturdy stilettos to perform in as his drag queen alter-ego Lola, and the pair bond as they plot to lift the company out of financial dire straits by making the erotic footwear.

Sydney performer Toby Francis plays Charlie, and British star Callum Francis is making his Australian debut as Lola in the local run of the show.

The production features writing by Harvey Fierstein and Tony and Grammy-winning songs by pop icon Cyndi Lauper, speaking to the New York Times, Lauper and Fierstein said that in the musical adaptation they focussed on themes of community and family and explore the issues of tolerance and self-acceptance through the show’s lead characters.

The show’s Australian producer Michael Cassel said the show played to packed houses during its five-month national premiere run in Melbourne in October last year and its Sydney run earlier this year.

“There’s just something about this show which connects with people of all ages from all walks of life and keeps them coming back for more,” he said.

“Kinky Boots’ universal message tugs at the heartstrings, while its fabulous sense of humour and amazing music has audiences dancing in the aisles. As Cyndi’s lyrics suggest, it really does ‘raise you up’ and ‘light you up like a live wire’!”

“I know Brisbane audiences are going to embrace this huge-hearted hit and I speak for the show’s original producers, Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig, when I say that we are all incredibly excited to be bringing this show to QPAC.”

Kinky Boots will play at QPAC from August 22 until October 22. For tickets and more details visit QPAC’s website or the KinkyBootsTheMusical.com.au
