Brisbane Festival WEB

The Brisbane Festival will again explode across the city next month, with a thrilling month-long lineup of theatre, music, dance, circus, opera and major public events from September 3 to 24, concluding as always with the spectacular Riverfire.

See just a couple of the highlights from the Brisbane Festival below:

CALIFORNIA CROONERS CLUB (Aurora Spiegeltent, September 3-11)
Conceived by Aussie TV star Hugh Sheridan (pictured below, left), the California Crooners Club joins talented mates Emile Welman and Gabe Roland to merge jazz classics with varied styles of singing across crooning, R&B and rap, and pop songs by the likes of Sia, Justin Timberlake, and Sam Smith. This is Dean Martin meets Diplo, or Sinatra singing Taylor Swift.

UNBUTTONED (Metro Arts, September 15-18)
Unbuttoned is a mini-festival at the Metro Theatre that pries open the gap between man and woman to gaze at the space between. It’s a sticky four-day program of performance, visual art, and film that asks: What does it mean to be in these bodies? How do we do gender, how do we undo gender? Improve your technique in the Wank Bank Masterclass, see through the eyes of friends and neighbours in the Gender Gaze exhibition, or sing your favourite hits at Femioke.

BLANC DE BLANC (Magic Mirrors Spiegeltent, September 2-24)
Blanc de Blanc brings the finest cabaret and acrobatic talent from around the world into a seductive, immersive and naughty night featuring giant bubbles, foam, a human champagne fountain and more. From the creative minds behind Madonna’s Rebel Heart tour and festival sensations LIMBO, Fear & Delight, and Cantina, this production is direct from London’s West End.

MEOW MEOW’S LITTLE MERMAID (Aurora Spiegeltent, September 15-24)
Meow Meow’s Little Mermaid is a decidedly un-Disney cabaret. Join Meow Meow (played by Melissa Madden Gray, pictured below) as she raucously subverts Hans Christian Andersen’s mermaid tale of teen self-sacrifice, salvation and seduction. Sea shanties gives way to contemporary pop songs as a young mermaid longs to gain a human soul, body, and the love of a young prince.
