Gold Coast teen’s queer love video eyes top BUFTA film prize

BUFTA Queer Love video

Gold Coast teen Emily Ross is in line for the top BUFTA film prize this year.

Her queer love video Contracts in Candlelight is one of the top 3 finalists for this year’s music video prize.

Her school is also dominating the nominations.

All three finalist positions for the music video category have also been taken by students from her school.

“Growing up I never saw this sort of representation”

For their senior school media assignment, students are asked to create a video for a “royalty-free” song.

Students must then film and edit the final product, which is submitted to the annual BUFTA awards.

Rather than use a generic song Emily decided to put her musical talents to use.

Instead, she wrote and recorded her own original song Contracts in Candlelight.

When it came to creating the video for her song Emily wanted to show something different to what is normally seen in music videos.

“Growing up I never saw this sort of representation in music videos,” she said.

“I can’t think of any time I saw anything like this.”

“So instead, I wanted to make something different and have a chance to tell a different story through my music.”

The final product is a beautiful and poetic queer love video featuring two young women as they reminisce their romance.
