A new report from GLAAD has revealed an alarming increase in anti-LGBTQ hate and extremism across the United States in 2024.

Data from GLAAD’s ALERT Desk shows that at least 918 incidents of anti-LGBTQ hate have been recorded—an average of 2.5 incidents every day.

The report details a disturbing range of incidents, including over 260 protests, 140 bomb threats, 140 acts of vandalism, and 85 assaults. Tragically, acts of violence motivated by anti-LGBTQ hate have resulted in at least 90 injuries and seven deaths in 2024. Among those lost to anti-LGBTQ violence are Arkmayer Davis, Todd Pinion, Howard Brisendine, Micah Laureano, Reginald Folks, Tayy Dior Thomas, and John Walter Lay.

Transgender, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming individuals remain disproportionately targeted, accounting for 48 per cent of all incidents. Additionally, education-related anti-LGBTQ incidents have surged, with at least 216 cases of violence and harassment aimed at educators, librarians, school board members, and students over their LGBTQ identities or their support for LGBTQ people.

GLAAD’s ALERT Desk also reported that individuals displaying LGBTQ symbols, such as Pride flags, have been targeted in 159 incidents. Drag performers and healthcare providers have similarly faced rising hostility, with 122 and 109 incidents recorded, respectively.

The increase in violence and harassment coincides with a surge in discriminatory legislation, particularly targeting transgender youth. Proposed laws restricting access to bathrooms, participation in school sports, and essential healthcare have been linked to escalating real-world harm.

GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis condemned the rise in hate-fuelled violence.

“The numbers from GLAAD’s ALERT Desk are shocking, but ultimately unsurprising as anti-LGBTQ policies and rhetoric rise, including from elected officials and social media platforms,” Ms Ellis said.

“Words, proposals, and actions have consequences in the real world on real human beings, even as support for LGBTQ people and youth remains at supermajority levels. Together, we must push for a world that not only protects LGBTQ people from harm, but also uplifts and embraces our voices.”

  1. While these incidents are concerning, there’s no comparative data showing what the ‘increase’ represents.
