Netflix has dropped the first teaser for the upcoming gay teen Marine dramedy Boots.
The eight part comedic drama series is on Netflix on October 9, and stars Miles Heizer (13 Reasons Why) and Vera Farmiga.
In the teaser trailer, closeted teenager Cameron Cope impulsively makes a big decision to join the military at a time when being gay in the armed services is illegal.
“My life needs a change, sir. I want to be somebody else,” he tells a recruiter.
“Son, boot camp is the machine that turns boys into men,” the man replies as Cameron smiles. “In 13 weeks, you won’t even recognize yourself. Are you sure you’re ready for that?”
Then, as Cameron’s bus pulls up to the Marine base, a drill sergeant runs on, shouting at the teenagers to get in line.
“Oh, dear,” Cameron says.
Boots is based on the memoir The Pink Marine by Greg Cope White, which recounted his real-life experiences as a gay man in the US Marine Corps in the 1980s.
The new show, set a decade later, is from creator Andy Parker (who previously worked on Netflix’s Tales of the City) series and executive produced by the late sitcom legend Norman Lear.
Netflix describes the show as “a one-hour comedic drama that delivers an irreverent, off-beat take on the coming-of-age story”. It was
“Set in the tough, unpredictable world of the 1990s US Marine Corps—when being gay in the military was still illegal—the series follows directionless, closeted Cameron Cope (Miles Heizer) and his best friend Ray McAffey (Liam Oh), the son of a decorated Marine, as they join a diverse group of recruits,” the synopsis states.
“Together, this ensemble navigates the literal and metaphorical landmines of boot camp, forging unlikely bonds and discovering their true selves in an environment designed to push them to their limits.”
Boots starts on Netflix on October 9.
