The Voice Australia contestant Nathan Brake popped the question to his boyfriend on Sunday night’s episode of the Channel Nine singing competition.
Brake paused his blind audition to pop the question to longtime partner Mitchell Baines.
He told the show’s four judges he had “another decision to make that was separate to choosing a coach,” and brought partner Mitchell out onstage and thanked him for being “a constant support for me over these past six years.”
On one knee, Nathan presented an engagement ring to Mitchell and asked, “Will you marry me?”
The 26-year-old told the Daily Mail his “cheeks hurt from smiling” after the proposal. He said he only decided to go through with it the night before.
“Honestly, it feels like a little bit of a blur,” he said.
“Looking back on it now, there was just so much happening. I just remember my cheeks hurting from smiling. I went from fear to then excitement then to joy.”
Nathan said last year’s successful ‘yes’ vote played a role in him wanting to take the next step in his relationship.
“I had kind of been thinking about proposing just because of the whole experience of the postal marriage thing and how divisive that was,” he said.
“I just thought that would be the perfect opportunity – if I was to turn some chairs, why not elevate that experience by sharing it with Mitchell?”
He continued, “I am really hoping that… it’s just that one step forward of complete acceptance in society.
“I feel like now that the survey happened and the results came through with a positive answer, people can watch this and really feel happy and excited that this is the direction the country is going in and I can actually pledge my love on this platform without any worries.
“Three years ago, that wasn’t something that was a reality. To be able to do it now, I’m extremely grateful to even be able to stand up there and have the opportunity to share that.”
