Gay Couple Wed On Rainbow Crossing Outside Margaret Court Arena

A gay couple has gotten “illegally married” outside Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne over the weekend.

Ron Van Houwelingen and his partner of thirty years Antony McManus got hitched at a rally outside the arena protesting comments made by the venue’s namesake, tennis legend Margaret Court, against marriage equality and transgender people.

Attendees also drew a large rainbow crossing outside the venue with chalk, on a mission to “make it fabulous”.

DIY Rainbow founder James “Breko” Brechney organised the event and also conducted the “illegal” wedding ceremony.

“Obviously we find Margaret Court’s statements abhorrent,” Van Houwelingen told Fairfax Media.

“We believe that giving Margaret Court a platform for her hate speech is not acceptable given her status, so we’re sending her a message of love.

“Antony and I have been together 30 years this September and we believe that we should have the right to have our love sanctioned before the state.”
