A funeral service for Queensland man Matty Soppa will be held this Friday on the Sunshine Coast.
Matty was well-known in the Queensland LGBTIQ community, working at Brisbane’s Sportsman Hotel as a bartender and dancer and at Fortitude Valley men’s venue Club 29. Friends are remembering Matty as a generous volunteer who gave his time to fundraise with a number of Brisbane community groups.
A funeral service for Matty will be held this Friday (April 27) from 1.30pm at the Gregson and Weight chapel at 202 Eumundi Noosa Rd in Noosaville.
All are welcome to attend, and family have asked people to wear rainbow colours, their favourite onesie, and bring your favourite Disney character to cuddle.
Family are crowdfunding to raise money for his memorial and have requested in lieu of flowers a donation be made towards his memorial and men’s suicide prevention.
“On April 12 our much-loved boy lost his battle with mental illness and took his own life,” Matty’s family wrote.
“Our family have struggled to come to terms with this heartbreaking event in life and it has proven tough to bring together the money needed for the funeral so we have decided to ask if any of you can help, in any small way.
“Money raised beyond what we need will be donated to a suicide awareness or men’s mental health organization yet to be decided.
“No person should have to suffer and we need to all come together, find love, show love… We hope Matty’s passing will remind you all to ask each other, ‘Are you okay?'”
For those unable to attend the funeral, an event will also be held in his honour at the Sportsman Hotel in Brisbane.
