Adelaide all-boys school Prince Alfred College are fully supporting a Year 12 student transitioning to female, in a first for the prestigious private school.

Prince Alfred College, associated with the Uniting Church, was established in 1869. Except for during World War II, the school has only accepted male students.

Principal Bradley Fenner wrote to parents on Tuesday evening to share that the student will complete Year 12 at the college.

“This morning, a student who has been at Prince Alfred College since the Early Learning Centre has told her peers she’s transgender,” he wrote.

“[The student] has been dealing with gender dysphoria for some time. [She] has been well-supported in her journey by a range of professionals, both within and outside the college.”

Fenner said he was aware of some trans alumni, but explained she is the first student to transition while at the college.

“It was [her] desire and preference to remain at Prince Alfred College and we support her fully in this,” he said.

Transgender student shared her story with Year 12 peers

Prince Alfred College principal Bradley Fenner explained the student had shared her story with 150 Year 12 peers earlier in the week.

“I thought it was very powerful when she spoke to her peers, to the other Year 12 students on Tuesday,” Fenner told ABC Radio Adelaide.

“She made the point, ‘This is who I am and this is who I’ve always been.’

“It’s very much a statement about who she is.

“She is a living embodiment of our college motto – do brave deeds and endure. That’s exactly what she’s done.”

He added, “Our role as a school is to support all of our students and not just those who conform to the way things have always been.

“We have a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness and those things cannot just be words on the page.”
