US network ABC’s fairy tale drama Once Upon A Time has introduced its very first same-sex couple.
The romance comes after showrunners Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis promised fans that the show would introduce a same-sex couple in its fifth season.
The episode, titled “Ruby Slippers,” features fairy tale favourites Mulan, Dorothy (from The Wizard of Oz) and Ruby (from Little Red Riding Hood) as they go to Oz to defeat the Wicked Witch.
However, during the mission, Dorothy is hit with a sleeping curse which can only be broken by her true love. Mulan encourages Ruby to save her, telling the iconic fairy tale character, “Don’t the same mistake that I did. Don’t wait until it’s too late to tell someone how you feel.”
Following Mulan’s pep talk, Ruby heads to the Underworld to wake Dorothy from the curse with a ‘true love kiss’, establishing the two women as a couple.

In a statement, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis said, “True love’s kiss has been a staple of this show since the beginning. This past Sunday’s episode was just another example of how in a fairy tale, as in life, love is love.”
The response to the kiss has been overwhelmingly positive, with many glad that the hit TV show has finally included LGBT characters. Many viewers are also eager to see how their relationship develops in the rest of the season and beyond.
