Eugene Levy beautifully shares what it means to be a father and role model, as he talks about when his son, Dan Levy, came out as gay in the latest episode of his Apple TV+ series.
The latest season of the travel documentary The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy sees the actor open up about when his son told him he was gay.
The father and son not only created comedy gold with the series Schitts Creek, but are a powerful reflection of the importance of family and love.
In the Apple TV+ series, Eugene Levy steps out of his comfort zone and travels the world.
In a beautiful teaser of this week’s episode, ‘Hitting the Open Road in Louisiana’, Levy shares a special moment with guide and content creator Will Edmond.
Sharing powerful stories about coming out and what that means between parents and children.
Levy asks Edmond about when he came out to his dad.
“I was about 21.” Edmond said, “At first, I was kind of nervous.”
“I was very nervous because my dad is a very southern man.”
“My dad loves church. He’s very religious, and I didn’t know how he was going to take it.
“When I told him, I think he was shocked, because I’m his only son and I’m the oldest.”

‘That’s the only thing that matters. Love and Respect
Edmond said his father “wasn’t upset or mad”, but Levy knew that he could feel he “wasn’t embraced for a couple of weeks.”
Sitting around the campfire, Edmond shared that it was his mother who helped his father come around.
She said, “This is your only son; no matter what he does, still love him.”
“And then my dad instantly changed, like a big breath of fresh air.”
Levy shared that Daniel was 19 years old when he came out, and Edmond asked him how he felt when Dan told him.
“We were aware that he was gay,” Levy said.
“But we were just waiting for the right time for him to feel comfortable enough to tell us.”
“It was a huge thing for him, and it was fine. It was just like, okay, there you go. Good.”
The pair shared their hope that if someone was watching and struggling with the idea of having an LGBTQ+ child, maybe their chat would help.
“Maybe hearing about you as a dad or about my dad, maybe they can accept their kid more or love them more.” Edmond said.
“That’s what it’s about.” Levy added, “That’s the only thing that matters. Love and respect.”
It is a powerful and special conversation to witness.
New episodes of The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene drop each week on Apple TV+.
