When Elton John’s dear old mum Sheila Farebrother turned 90 this month, her famous son was too busy to show up for her birthday party. Undeterred, the birthday girl got the next best thing. She hired Paul Bacon, an impersonator billed as ‘The Ultimate Elton’ to take his place.
Elton and his mother have been estranged since 2008, reportedly after she made a comment to his husband David Furnish that the couple did not appreciate. Family feuds aside, Farebrother was not going to let these differences spoil her party so in came the impersonator who sang at the party alongside the real Kiki Dee.
Bacon described the experience as the ‘ultimate experience’. He found it funny that a number of people assumed he was the real Elton.
“I was kept a secret, nobody knew I was going to be there apart from Elton’s mother. So when I first came in there were a few gasps. I think one or two people thought I really was Elton.”
Kiki Dee told reporters that the event was a lot of fun and Elton’s mum had a great time.
“Sheila’s 90th birthday was a really special evening. It was wonderful to see her on the dance floor having a brilliant time with so much love around her.”
A spokesperson for Elton John said the singer was on tour in America but sent flowers.
