An interview with Ellen DeGeneres normally involves lots of dancing, jokes and fluffy conversation, but when Caitlyn Jenner recently sat down with the talk-show host, the questions turned serious.
Doing her best impersonation of a serious journalist, DeGeneres hit Jenner straight up with questions about Jenner’s opposition to same-sex marriage, and her support of the Republican Party.
Jenner explained that while she has supported same-sex marriage for some time, she was initially against the idea because she’s a traditionalist.
“I have to admit – I remember 15 years ago, 20 years ago whenever it was when the whole gay marriage issue came up – at first I was not for it,’ Jenner said.
‘I mean I thought I’m a traditionalist. I’m older than most people in the audience. I kind of like tradition and it’s always been a man and a woman. And I’m thinking I don’t quite get it. But as time has gone on, I think like a lot of people on this issue have really changed their thinking here to I don’t ever want to stand in front of anybody’s happiness.’
‘Marriage is marriage and equality is equality,’ DeGeneres pointed out to..
‘If that word marriage is really that important to you I can go with it. I’m on board. I’m okay with that,’ Jenner replied.
Before transitioning, Bruce Jenner had been married and divorced three times.
