The Dykes On Bikes (Queensland chapter) arrive in Rockhampton tonight on their fund-raising ride for Open Doors Youth Service.
They will be the star attraction at an Equality Rally in Victoria Park tomorrow (Saturday June 13th) from noon to 3pm.
The Dykes on Bikes (DOB) will then lead a rally of community members through the streets of the city, concluding at Quest Apartments at 3pm.
Later, DOB will be guests at Rockhampton Club-Rok’s monthly night at Flamingo’s on Quay from 8.30pm. It is a charity night with donations going to PFLAG CQ, which offers support to parents and friends of lesbians and gays.
The girls left Brisbane today at 6am and are riding via Caboolture, Gayndah (where they are meeting some girls from Hervey Bay way), Monto and arriving to meet some other riders in Biloela at 3.30pm..
From Biloela, they will head into Rockhampton arriving tonight at about 6 o’clock.
Club-Rok official Alan Flood said the rally was a family-friendly day to bring together the rainbow singles, couples, families and friends that call CQ home.
“In a time when equality still remains an issue for the gay and lesbian community here in Central Queensland, this rally allows the community the opportunity to celebrate their diversity and seek equality on matters relevant to them,” he said.
Mr Flood said the rally would be an intimate affair with music by Sophie Rose and a sausage sizzle (gold coin donation).
Mr Mojo’s Ice Cream will be on site with 50 small sundaes free for the little kids, Rainbow cupcakes will be for sale and there will also be fantastic creations from Keyoni Kreations, face painting and kite making.
Supporters and sponsors of the rally are Rockhampton Regional Council, who provided funds from the Community Assistance Program, Anti Discrimination Commission Queensland, Rockhampton Club-Rok Inc. Relationships Australia Queensland, Caltex The Oaks, Yeppoon and Gracemere and Quest Apartments Rockhampton.
All proceeds from the rally will go to Open Doors Youth Service which provides counselling and support services for gay youth in Queensland.
