Drag Race Thailand has crowned the popular reality TV franchise’s first ever transgender winner.
Trans queen Angele Anang was crowned winner during the finale of the Thai version of the show’s second season on Friday.
Show co-host Pangina Heals took to her social media accounts to congratulate Angele on the win, writing, “You worked hard and you showed the world you are an amazing artist and an amazing human being.”
In another post, Pangina posted a video of Angele receiving the crown and plaudits from the other contestants.
Another trans Drag Race Thailand contestant, Kandy Zyanide, made the top three and was named runner-up, after making headlines for lighting her dress on fire in an outrageous runway reveal.
RuPaul’s Drag Race has a complicated relationship with trans representation on the show, with creator RuPaul last year coming under fire for controversial comments about trans performers.
Drag Race Thailand began last year, and it’s not the only spinoff the drag juggernaut in production: a UK spinoff of the show is also in the works.
