Doctor Who has delighted fans by finally confirming a queer romance between the Doctor and her companion Yaz in new special Legend of the Sea Devils.
The long-running sci-fi show’s Easter special aired over the weekend was a pirate-themed adventure. Jodie Whittaker (above right) is the 13th incarnation of the Doctor, and the actress is the first female in the iconic role.
And during the most recent season – Whittaker’s last – the romantic tension has simmered between the Doctor and her female companion Yaz (Mandip Gill, above left). Fans dubbed the coupling “Thasmin”.
In the new special, the Doctor and Yaz end up on the ocean floor in the TARDIS, with the Doctor joking to her companion, “Not a bad date, am I?”
Later, the pair discuss their feelings for each other for the first time. The Doctor admits to Yaz that “if it was going to be anyone, it’d be you” in moving scenes.
“You know what I said earlier about not being a bad date?” she told her.
“Well, dating’s not something I really do.
“I mean, I used to. I have done. And if I was going to, believe me, it would be with you.
“You’re one of the greatest people I’ve ever known, including my wife.
She adds, “If it was going to be anyone, it’d be you. But I can’t.”
Yaz then asks her, “Why not?” to which the Time Lord replies, “Because, at some point, time always runs out.”
‘I wish this could go on forever’
Then at the conclusion of the latest episode, the two women again discuss their relationship in a scene together on a beach.
The Doctor tells Yasmin, “I can’t fix myself to anything, anywhere, or anyone.
“I’ve never been able to. That’s what my life is.
“Not because I don’t want to, because I might. But if I do fix myself to somebody, I know sooner or later it’ll hurt.
“Can we just live in the present of what we have, while we still have it?”
In the Easter special’s final moment, Yasmin urges The Doctor to make a wish as she skims a stone across the water.
The Doctor says out loud, “I wish this could go on forever.”

This scene 💙💙
I honestly believe this is potentially the best scene from 13 yet. The acting from Jodie & Mandip is just perfect. It’s performed beautifully.
If this is where Thasmin ends, it’s a stunning ending. pic.twitter.com/HBd5snmWw4

i Love the little moments of thasmin just looking at each other in this episode
it's like, for years we've picked up on and interpreted little glances, and now it feels like they're saying okay, yeah, this is intentional and means something pic.twitter.com/IsezKGVEIL
