Singer Darren Hayes has announced he’s sadly split from his husband of 17 years, Richard Cullen.

The 50-year-old shared the news on Instagram, writing that his marriage has “gently and beautifully come to a rest”.

Darren said they separated earlier this year, and are only going public about the split now.

“I am an open book when it comes to my music and lyrics but an intensely private person when it comes to my home and family life,” he wrote.

“Despite the challenge to keep the most sacred and precious parts of my life just for me, I have felt the need to be honest to those who have always cared for my inner world about what’s been going on in my private life these past two years.”

Darren confirmed he and Cullen have decided to end their relationship. They tied the knot in 2005.

“After 17 years of marriage to the best person I ever met, Richard and I have chosen to accept that our union has gently and beautifully come to a rest,” he wrote.

“In honour of this realisation, we separated earlier this year and have been supporting each other emotionally throughout this massive change in our lives.”

But the singer added, “Because people will ask, let me answer the ugly questions to get them out of the way forever – no, there’s no scandal to report, no infidelity, guilty or third party. It’s just life. We adore each other and always will.”

The singer said he and Richard are still “best friends” and will continue to co-parent their beloved labradoodle.

“Thank you for always supporting our union,” he wrote.

“And for being so gentle with this delicate thing we made.”

Darren signed the statement on Instagram from himself and Cullen.

The couple met in 2004 and tied the knot in a private ceremony in London in 2005. In 2006, the pair entered a formal civil partnership and married again for the third time in 2013 as an act of solidarity for those still seeking same-sex marriage rights.

Earlier this week, Darren Hayes released a music video for new break-up single Feels Like It’s Over.

He explained this week the music video’s subject matter was very personal and difficult to make.

“Never in my entire career has art ever imitated life more than this year,” he wrote.

He thanked director Andrew Huebscher and co-star Casey James, who “laughed with me and patiently held me while I cried for three days straight” during the shoot.

“This is the end of an era in so many ways. I poured my soul into this album, this tour and into people I met along the way,” Darren said.

“And yes, I got my heart broken in the end. Was it worth it? I don’t know. But it’s all real. I don’t know how to be any other way.”
