Colton Haynes Speaks Out Against Homophobia In Hollywood

Colton Haynes has slammed Hollywood for treating LGBTI actors unfairly.

The 29-year-old actor, who is engaged to florist Jeff Leatham, took to Twitter to argue that filmmakers are too often swayed by an actor’s “personal life” when hiring them for a role rather than their acting ability.

“Hollywood is so f—ed up. So much of the focus is on your personal life and has nothing to do with the talent you have to bring to the table,” Colton tweeted.

“So disappointed Hollywood can’t understand that playing a character has nothing to do with how you live your personal life.”

Colton, who has had roles on TV series Teen Wolf and Arrow, will next appear as Detective Samuels in FX’s American Horror Story: Cult.

Colton thanked the three openly gay producers behind those shows – Ryan Murphy, Greg Berlanti and Jeff Davis.

“They believe gay actors are more than just their personal lives,” he said.

The actor came out in May last year, and revealed he’d “intensely struggled” for years but coming out changed his life for the better.

“All the shame led me to have a breakdown and I had to quit for a while. Once I came out it all went away,” he told radio station SiriusXM in June.

“I got multiple offers for work and honestly have never felt better. It changes your life and if someone isn’t going to hire me for being born the way that I am, they don’t deserve my time or energy.

“There’s so much support I never knew was available for me and I am so proud to say that I am gay and it hasn’t done anything to hurt what I love to do in life. Times are thankfully changing.”
