Pastor Chris Ayers was dismayed when he arrived at his church in Charlotte’s Madison Park neighbourhood to find the words “Fags are pedos” spray-painted across the front doors.
Vandals had crossed out the words “LGBT Equality” and substituted them with the homophobic slur.
“Heart-piercing was the thing that came to my mind,” Pastor Ayers told qnotes.
“I really didn’t think about the church. I thought about the LGBT friends that I have. As a pastor, you hear all of these horrible stories for all these years.
“Everything is put in the context of these personal rejections that I know people have faced and this is just one more.”
But, as the Good Book says, it’s best to turn the other cheek.
So volunteers from his flock painted over the offensive words on the church’s entrance with rainbow colours.
If that wasn’t enough, they are also changed the vandalised LGBT Equality sign that was defaced to one which reads: “We forgive you.”
Kimberlee Walker, a deacon at Wedgewood Church, told WCNC: “No amount of spray paint is going to stop us.”
One could say that the homophobes were painted into a corner … it’s perhaps worth remembering that “every artist dips his brush in his own soul”.
