Love – of God and others – is the foundation of faith.

That is the mantra of Susan Cottrell, a prominent voice in the United States for faith parents of LGBTQ children.

Cottrell is in Queensland this month promoting her book, Mom I’m Gay: Loving your LGBTQ Child and Strengthening Your Faith.

Cottrell’s family had been in the evangelical church for 25 years, but when their daughter came out, it was clear to them that the church would no longer be a welcoming place if they chose to support their gay child.

Married for 27 years and the mother of five children, two of whom are gay, Cottrell is committed to freeing the hearts of mums and dads to unconditionally love, accept and affirm their children, while strengthening their faith.

When our daughter Annie came out, I knew we would never fit in the church again,” Cottrell said.

Parents are being surprised daily as their kids come out. Many are left shell-shocked, unsure how to reconcile the situation, and unsure how this fits with what they’ve always believed about homosexuality.

I know how they feel. My book is straight from my heart, and is a feet-on-the-ground approach to bringing all the pieces together.

It’s perfect for anyone taking a real look at this issue.”

Cottrell’s appearances:

Friday, June 3 – Mums Retreat, Sunshine Coast
Sunday, June 5 – MCC, Brisbane

Wednesday, June 8 – Methyr Rd Uniting, Brisbane
Thursday, June 9 – Dymocks Bookstore, Brisbane.
