Catholic protesters have rallied in outrage outside a premiere of Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven’s erotic lesbian nun drama Benedetta.

The film stars Virginie Efira as Benedetta Carlini, a novice 17th century nun who joins an Italian convent.

After she takes in a young woman, she soon begins experiencing passionate, erotic visions which leads to a romantic affair with her fellow sister.

And a few dozen outraged protesters gathered outside the “blasphemous” film’s New York Film Festival premiere this week.

“We vehemently protest the blasphemous lesbian movie Benedetta, that insults the sanctity of Catholic nuns,” one sign reads.

“Why the endless insults to Jesus?” another asked.

But the festival hilariously acknowledged the protesters, posting a photo of them to Twitter with a link to buy tickets.

Others also pointed out the sheer amount of free publicity the protesters were giving to the movie.

Benedetta is released in Australia in February

Benedetta is based on Judith C Brown’s 1986 non-fiction book Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy (Studies in the History of Sexuality).

The film stars Virginie Efira, Lambert Wilson, Daphne Patakia and Charlotte Rampling.

Benedetta is slated for release in Australia in February 2022.
