A city in Canada has voted to paint a street crossing in the colours of the transgender pride flag, in what is believed to be a world first.
The Lethbridge Herald reported council members in the city of Lethbridge have voted 8-1 to install two new permanent street crossings, one featuring the rainbow pride flag and another featuring the blue, pink and white of the transgender pride flag.
Lethbridge Pride Fest vice chair Corbin Chenger said he hopes the new crossings will encourage other cities to follow suit.
“We’re going to be setting the standard for other cities – much, much bigger cities around the world – who have been debating and talking about maybe doing a transgender flag crosswalk,” he said.
“When I think about members of the transgender community that I know, I know this means a lot to them.
“They look to this symbol… and it’s going to say this city welcomes them, that we want to be inclusive, that we’re here for them, and we’re going to fight for their rights.”
