The entries to Citipointe Christian College in Carindale were lined with candles last Thursday night as a group of Brisbane LGBTI protesters staged a silent vigil outside an Australian Christian Lobby event.
American conservative commentator and author Eric Metaxas is the star guest at a string of ACL events around the country this month.
The evangelical Christian has likened the gay rights movement with the rise of Nazism in previous interviews and has advocated for harmful so-called “gay cure” therapies.
The protest action in Brisbane was organised by local LGBTI activist Gary Dodkins.
“We planned a peaceful protest, a candlelight vigil, to honour those who have suffered and died because of the homophobic, biphobic and transphobic culture fostered by right-wing religious extremists like Metaxas and the Australian Christian Lobby,” Gary said.
A crowd of protesters, including some Christian leaders, also gathered outside the Australian Christian Lobby’s national conference event in Sydney on Saturday to show support for marriage equality, LGBTI rights and to call out the Australian Christian Lobby’s campaign against the Safe Schools program.
Eric Metaxas will next speak at an ACL event in Melbourne on Wednesday, April 27, and an LGBTI rights protest outside is also planned.
