After hosting some 2400 weddings, the Brisbane couple who own the 140-year-old Broadway Chapel in Woolloongabba have put it up for sale.
James Paulsen and Nick Dubinin (above) have owned the property for almost two decades.
In 2004, the pair finished a beautiful restoration of the church and then reopened it as a non-denominational wedding venue.
On August 16 that year, the couple celebrated a commitment ceremony in front of family and friends at the refurbished Chapel.
“We planned the commitment ceremony as a way of introducing ourselves to the wedding industry. At the time we didn’t have that much experience,” James said.
“We went through the entire process of planning and holding the ceremony, and ended up having one of the best days of our lives.”
Since then, Australia has legalised same-sex marriage. On the same date two years ago, James and Nick got married inside the Chapel.
They’ve welcomed some 2400 couples into the Broadway Chapel to tie the knot since 2004.
James said around a quarter of the couples who’ve wed there since the start of 2018 have been same-sex couples.
Following a difficult period due to Covid and the Brisbane Olympics announcement, the couple are taking the opportunity to begin a new chapter.
“We’ve had the building for about 18 years, and the business for almost as long,” James said.
“After the Brisbane Olympics announcement we thought, given its close proximity to the Gabba, it’s the perfect time for someone else to come in and find value in it.
“After 18 years, Nick and I are looking for a new adventure.”
‘Everyone who walks into Broadway Chapel falls in love’
The Broadway Chapel, which dates back to 1884, is located at 49 Broadway Street in Woolloongabba, Brisbane.
During the renovation, James and Nick maintained original features including cathedral ceilings, stained glass windows, floating cherub chandeliers and replica Gothic doors.
“It would be great if somebody could keep it in such a way that it still has public access,” James said.
“Everyone who walks in here falls in love.”
Inside, a room at the rear of the chapel could serve as a bedroom, living space, dining room or office.
A mezzanine space houses a modern kitchen and dining area with city views, as well as a modern bathroom/laundry.
Outside, the property also features a double garage and private, front terrace with gardens and a water feature.
Real estate agency Place Woolloongabba is marketing the property. Expressions of interest are open until September 9.
