The support around the Amanda Mark Cup continued to be one of the highlights of the tournament on Friday.

Every game has been supported in a massive way on and off the field, with players, teammates and supporters packing the sidelines throughout the day. The spirit around the competition has been brilliant to watch and be part of.

On the field, Brisbane Hustlers Women picked up their first victory of the tournament with an impressive 15-10 win over Emerald Warriors.

Melbourne Chargers Women also broke through for their first win. After narrowly losing to 7-5 by the unbeaten Nashville Stone Lions earlier in the day, the Chargers returned to defeat the Philadelphia Gryphons 17-7.

Bingham Cup

One of the biggest stories of Day 2 came from the First Nations Lorikeets.

Playing at their first Bingham Cup, the team claimed its historic first victory with a 28-14 win over Baltimore Flamingos.

Jonah is a fullback with the Lorikeets, and they had their first win yesterday, with the team only truly coming together the day before.

“Having our first Bingham win was huge; it felt great. I think Saunders scoring the first try really set us off. We fired up after that, and it brought our full Lorikeets team into the game.”

The Lorikeets returned later in the afternoon to defeat Kings Cross Steelers 2nd XV 33-13, making it two wins from two on Friday and securing a place in the Bingham Cup quarterfinals.

After finally bringing the full squad together in Brisbane, Jonah said the significance of the occasion was beginning to sink in.

“It feels so real right now; we’re all riding this high and making the most of it.”

For the First Nations team, there is also something much bigger than the results,

“It’s just so special that we get to bring our full selves to the game and show what we are all about.”

The Brisbane Hustlers also had plenty to celebrate after a perfect Day 2.

The hosts ran out 60-0 winners over NZ Falcons before backing that up with a 40-0 victory against Los Angeles Rebellion.

For Steve from the Hustlers and Bingham Cup organising committee, seeing years of preparation finally become a reality has been emotional.

“I can’t believe it is finally here. I cried a lot at the opening ceremony and when we had the first kick-off, thinking it’s finally here,” he said.

“It’s been a great start. We played the Sydney Convicts on the first day, and it was a very close day; we won both our games today and are feeling good. Tired but good.”

Steve also praised Norths Rugby Club for the way it has embraced the tournament.

“We have to give a shout-out to Norths Rugby Club because they have really turned it on and stepped up and shown how they support our community and an event like this as well.”

Elsewhere, Sydney Convicts 1 were dominant, beating Los Angeles Rebellion 47-5 and NZ Falcons 60-0.

Kings Cross Steelers 1XV were similarly convincing, while Melbourne Chargers Gold edged Gotham Knights 8-7 in one of the closest games of the day.

Brisbane Hustlers 2 made sure the host club would have representation moving up the tournament structure after another win on Friday.

They defeated Crescent City Rougaroux 14-5, completing a strong pool campaign and earning promotion into the Hoagland tier for Saturday.

Manchester Village Spartans were similarly impressive, beating Dallas Lost Souls 41-5, while Amsterdam Lowlanders defeated Atlanta Bucks RFC 26-14.

For the teams remaining in Challenger, the focus now turns to their own Cup knockout matches.

And while the competition has been fierce, the experience surrounding it has been just as significant for many of those taking part.

David from the Dallas Lost Souls only began playing with the team in October and is attending his first Bingham Cup.

“This has been amazing; this is the best thing I have ever done,” he said.

“Being a part of this and meeting people from all over the world and playing rugby with great friends and great people has been awesome.”

For David, the inclusive environment has made an immediate impression.

“This is a brand new experience for me, and it is just so welcoming and feels like home – this is amazing.”

More than the rugby

Away from the results, volunteers have been helping keep a tournament involving clubs from around the world running across multiple venues.

Lachlan travelled up from Melbourne and chose to volunteer this year while wearing braces rather than risk an injury playing.

Having spent the opening two days working at different fields, he said it had given him a completely different view of the tournament.

“Volunteering has been really great. I’m normally on the pitch, so it’s really interesting being behind the scenes helping out and seeing how it works on the back end,” he said.

“The energy is amazing. And a tournament like this can’t happen without volunteers, so I’m really happy to step up and help in that way.

“It’s always an amazing atmosphere at a tournament like this with teams and volunteers from around the world. Everyone is coming together to put on a great tournament, and we are all having fun and playing and watching some amazing rugby.”

Bart from the Perth Rams summed up just how much the opening two days have meant to many of the players.

“What an emotional rollercoaster the first two days have been,” he said.

“I’ve been going from being completely ecstatic to tears of joy every day, and the connection and community have been unreal.

“The Hustlers have done an incredible job of pulling this together and showing the best of what Australia’s got.

“Seeing all this support from all the teams is just unreal, and we are having a lot of fun off the field too.”

The Bingham Cup continues across Brisbane on Saturday before the finals on Sunday.
