Barbra Streisand has weighed in with her thoughts on Lady Gaga’s star turn in Bradley Cooper’s 2018 remake of A Star Is Born.

The music icon spoke to The Project on Sunday night to chat about her new album Release Me 2, featuring unreleased songs.

The Project‘s Lisa Wilkinson also asked Streisand for her thoughts Gaga’s A Star Is Born, after Streisand famously starred in the 1976 version of the musical.

Wilkinson said before Streisand, Judy Garland had played the role in 1954, and Gaga had played it after her. Wilkinson described it as “an extraordinary lineup of female talent.”

“Let’s talk about that a bit,” Streisand kicked off.

“When I did A Star Is Born, I thought Judy Garland was so great in it. I thought, ‘Oh my god, how am I going to do this? I have to change it.’

“I’ll become a guitar-playing singer-songwriter, and [co-star] Kris Kristofferson is already a singer-songwriter. We changed the story a bit.

“At first, when I heard it was going to be done again, it was supposed to be Will Smith and Beyonce. And I thought, ‘That’s interesting.’

“Really make it different again; different kind of music, different actors.

“I thought that was an idea, so I was surprised when I saw how alike it was to the version that I did in 1976.”

Wilkinson then diplomatically cut in, “Well, that’s probably a compliment to you.”

However Streisand responded, “I don’t know, but I thought it was the wrong idea.

“Look, it was a big success so I can’t argue with success. But I don’t care so much about success as I do originality.”
