Aussie queer film ‘Body Blow’ features powerful new single ‘Running’ by Greg Gould

Greg Gould has released his powerful new single Running, featured in the award-winning queer Australian film Body Blow, which makes a sold-out Australian debut at the Sydney Film Festival next week.

Running is the powerful closing credits theme for the award-winning feature film directed by acclaimed filmmaker Dean Francis.

Body Blow reimagines a classic film noir as a “neon-soaked descent into Sydney’s underworld,” and was shot on location in Darlinghurst and the iconic Stonewall Hotel.

The first single released from the forthcoming Body Blow Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, Running is an anthemic pop-rock ballad.

The song is driven by Gould’s soaring vocals, as well as cinematic production and epic soundtrack energy.

Capturing the emotional heartbeat of the film, the song blends vulnerability, resilience and hope into one unforgettable finale.

Written and performed by Gould, the track serves as the emotional conclusion to a story that has already generated international acclaim on the festival circuit.

Gould described creating the huge cinematic anthem as “something with that classic James Bond-style emotion and scale. I honestly poured everything I had into it.”

“When this opportunity came my way, I was really excited,” he told QNews, “Because I’ve never written for a film before, and obviously I only just released my first original album a couple years ago.”

“I’ve been writing a song since I was 16 years old, but I’ve had a lot of false starts. It was really exciting to be writing for a movie, because it’s a completely different experience.”

Helping to shape the emotional landscape of the story and further immersing audiences in its world was an exciting challenge for Gould.

“I’ve always written from a personal and cathartic place,” he said, “I’m either getting my feelings down to help myself or someone else.”

“It’s always been a really personal art form for me, whereas when you’re writing for other characters, it’s not about you.”

“I found it really cool to step inside a different world and write about other stories that are not my own personal experiences. It was really interesting.

Gould didn’t see the film until his songs were already a part of it, which added to the creativity.

“I only saw little clips or got told a synopsis of what the scene’s about, and it was just really cool but also surreal seeing references in the songs that I had no idea about when I was putting it together.

“It’s an absolute honour to be part of a critically acclaimed film like Body Blow. Running was my chance to write a huge cinematic anthem.

“I loved working with award-winning director Dean Francis to capture the essence of the film through these songs. It’s such a complicated yet beautiful love story that sends you on a rollercoaster of emotional twists and turns.”

The Body Blow Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be released in August.

It also features original compositions from Andreas Dominguez, Tim Pocock & director Dean Francis.

‘The music became an important part of the storytelling’

“Greg has one of those rare voices that can deliver both extraordinary power and genuine emotional vulnerability,” Dean Francis said, “From the moment I heard ‘Running’, I knew it perfectly captured the spirit of Body Blow.”

“The music became an important part of the storytelling, and Greg brought a level of passion and authenticity that elevated every scene his songs touched. The result is something audiences will continue thinking about long after the credits roll.”

Tim Pocock plays Disgraced cop Aiden, who is thrust into Sydney’s neon-soaked gay district, where a chance encounter with Cody, a seductive bartender and sex worker, sparks a dangerous spiral.

Blackmailed into working for Fat Frankie, a murderous drag queen mob boss, Aiden is drawn into a deadly heist and a twisted game of survival.

As he battles desire, betrayal, and his own demons, Aiden must decide if redemption is worth the price of betrayal.

“Body Blow is a love letter to the erotic thrillers and taboo-breaking noirs that lit up my imagination as a young queer filmmaker,”  Francis said.

“It’s seductive and dangerous, yes — but underneath the gloss, it’s about power, control, and the way desire can unravel us.”

Francis directed beach thriller Drown in 2015 and produced the AACTA-nominated Lonesome with Craig Boreham in 2022.
