Australian actor Kodi Smit-McPhee has won a Golden Globe for his role in Jane Campion’s psychological drama The Power of the Dog on Netflix.

Smit-McPhee took home Best Supporting Actor at the unusual Golden Globes ceremony on Monday, Australian time.

The Power of the Dog also took out Best Director, for New Zealand director Jane Campion, and Best Motion Picture Drama. It received seven nominations in total.

The film explores themes of sexuality and toxic masculinity in 1920s Montana and is streaming on Netflix. It’s based on a novel by Thomas Savage and the film has earned rave reviews.

Smit-McPhee co-stars alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemmons and Kirsten Dunst.

Cumberbatch plays domineering and fearsome ranch-hand Phil (Cumberbatch) in the dark character drama.

When Phil’s brother George (Plemmons) brings home wife Rose (Dunst) and her teenage son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee), he cruelly torments the family until long-hidden secrets come to light.

MJ Rodriguez first trans actress to win Golden Globe

This year’s Golden Globe Awards were chaotic and hugely controversial. On Monday (Australian time) the ceremony was held in private, with no red carpet and no telecast or even livestream.

Winners were announced on social media.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) usually votes on the annual awards.

But over the past year, the HFPA came under fire for unethical practices and a lack of racial diversity sparking film industry boycotts.

During the private ceremony, MJ Rodriguez became the first openly trans woman to win a Golden Globe.

The actress won the Golden Globe for Best Performance By An Actress In A Television Series – Drama for her role as Blanca in HBO ballroom drama Pose.

Other Aussies to win Golden Globes at the ceremony were Nicole Kidman and Sarah Snook.

Kidman won for her performance as TV icon Lucille Ball in Being The Ricardos. Snook won for her role on HBO TV series Succession.
