Ask the Experts: All about fertility with Queensland Fertility Group

Queensland Fertility Group

We asked Dr Ee Min Kho from Queensland Fertility Group about different options for starting a family. Donor sperm, surrogacy, IVF — how does it all work?

I’m ready to have a family, where do I start?

It’s an exciting, and sometimes overwhelming, time of your life. As a fertility specialist, the best advice I can give is to simply start by visiting a fertility clinic with your partner.

At Queensland Fertility Group, we can assist with identifying the best course of treatment to help you have a baby, including accessing donor sperm or exploring surrogacy options.

What do I need to consider?

Everyone’s fertility journey is unique, and there are personal fertility factors that can influence your path to parenthood. During the first consultation with my patients, it’s all about getting to know you as a couple and finding out your desired pathway. Then, we will assess you or your partner’s fertility with a few simple tests to tailor a treatment plan.

What are my treatment options?

For people who have a uterus and eggs, fertility treatment called Intrauterine Insemination, or IUI, is typically the first place we start. This involves injecting donor sperm into the uterus of the partner intending to carry the pregnancy. The sperm can be either donated by someone you know or a clinic-recruited sperm donor.

IVF, or In Vitro Fertilization, is another option depending on the success of IUI or other individual fertility factors.

For those who don’t have a uterus or eggs, we have a dedicated team to guide you through the surrogacy process.
