In 2019, Arthur Nory Mariano also became the world champion on the horizontal bar. He previously won the Brazilian Child Gymnastics Championships as a fourteen-year-old.

In addition to his athletics career, the gymnast models as the face of the Philippine-based BENCH menswear in Latin America. João Otávio Tasso works as a broadcast media marketing analyst.

Mariano asserted his sexuality in a post celebrating his boyfriend’s birthday. Over the last year, many of the photos on Arthur’s Instagram have included João Otávio Tasso.

Happy Birthday

“Happy Birthday to the person who freaks out with me.

“The phrase ‘in health or illness, in victory or in defeat, in joy or sadness’ never quite fit. And there we are every day walking together. Thank you for always being by my side. I will always be yours.

“Congratulations João, many years of life and continue to be that amazing person, even if Scorpio (always good to blame the sign).”

In 2015, Arthur Nory Mariano and two teammates faced disciplinary action from the Brazilian national gymnastics team for racist comments they made on Snapchat about a dark-skinned gymnast. The team suspended Mariano for a month for the comments. He also apologised.

Ângelo Assumpção, the gymnast targeted by the comments later said he bore no grudge.

“I don’t keep a grudge on him. We are close friends. I am very proud of Nory. I just hope he behaves like a medal winner outside the arena too.”
