All three major candidates for the federal seat of Brisbane have offered support for phone and online support service Diverse Voices. The Brisbane-based service works alongside QLife to provide anonymous, LGBTI peer support and referral for people wanting to talk about a range of issues.

For over 30 years, LGBTIQ+ Queenslanders needing someone to talk to have rung Diverse Voices. They talk about issues as varied as sexuality, identity, gender, bodies, feelings or relationships.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the service recorded a substantial increase in callers.

QNews contacted all three major candidates for the seat of Brisbane to ask about their commitment to supporting this essential service.

Stephen Bates, The Greens

“We have seen our very right to exist as queer people be debated during this election. Community organisations such as Diverse Voices are an essential service and save countless lives each year.

“The Greens will appoint a Minister for Equality and will work to create a national LGBTQIA+ health and well-being action plan. This plan would work very closely with organisations like Diverse Voices to provide support for our community.

“We must also go further by removing anti-discrimination exemptions in schools and address the mental health crisis in our community by ensuring mental health services are covered entirely by Medicare.”

Trevor Evans MP, Liberal

“A re-elected Morrison Government will provide funding of $400,000 over two years to Diverse Voices to expand their services providing Queensland-specific support for the local LGBTIQA+
community.

“This funding will enable Diverse Voices to expand their valuable telephone and web-based support services.

“It is very important that there is high-quality support around the mental health and well-being of LGBTIQA+ people, which have been impacted by COVID-19 and the recent floods.

“These additional funds will enable Diverse Voices to grow as an organisation and continue to provide Queensland-specific peer-to-peer support for the local LGBTIQA+ community.

“As Queensland’s first openly gay MP, supporting the mental health needs of the local LGBTIQA+ community is part of my local plan for Brisbane, and recognises the important role diversity plays
in our community.”

Madonna Jarrett, Labor

“Diverse Voices provides a vital service for the LGBTQI+ community. If elected as the Member for Brisbane, I will fight to ensure that this important and supportive service continues its important work. I am an ally and will be a strong voice for the LGBTIQ+ community both in Brisbane and in Canberra.”
